We always think we have more time.

More time to say the things that matter. More time to become the parent, the friend, the neighbor—the person we quietly wish we were. More time to fix what’s quietly breaking: inside ourselves, inside our homes and families, inside our communities. But time is not a guarantee. It is a gift. And we are burning through it like it’s infinite.

We Tell Ourselves: “Tomorrow”

Tomorrow, we’ll put down our phones and pay attention. Tomorrow, we’ll have that one hard conversation we’ve been thinking about for two years. Tomorrow, we’ll show up more gently, more presently, more like the kind of person who makes others feel safe.

But tomorrow turns into next week, next year, the next season of life. In the meantime, the world keeps moving. Time keeps moving and so do the people in it. Children grow quieter. Families grow more distant. Communities get used to surviving instead of living.

We’re not doing this because we don’t care. We’re doing it because we’re tired, stretched thin, overwhelmed. We’ve been tricked into believing there will be some magical later when we finally have the bandwidth to become the version of ourselves we imagine.

But here’s the truth: there is no perfect time to start doing the next right thing. There is only now.

It doesn’t matter how many mistakes you’ve made in the past, or whether you think you’re too far gone. You have now and that is all you need. Viktor Frankl once famously wrote “You have the choice between stimulus and response. Every single time, you have that space".

You just have to make the right choice for yourself right now.

What Are We Waiting For?

We keep waiting for the system to change, for leaders to step up, for someone else to model what humanity looks like again. But we are the ones we’ve been waiting for. It’s us.

It’s the small moments; when we choose to listen instead of react. When we make room for a child’s meltdown without rushing to fix or label. When we pause our own chaos long enough to say, “I see you. I’m right here.”

That is the next right thing. And it isn’t huge… it’s human.

What If We Don’t?

If we keep waiting, we won’t just lose time. We’ll lose the ability to recognize each other. We’ll lose the thread that holds communities together: shared truth, deep compassion, and ordinary courage. Most painfully, we’ll raise kids who know how to hustle and cope but not how to feel safe in their own skin, or trust that someone will show up for them.

That is not a future worth postponing change for.

Start Small and Start Now

You don’t need to overhaul your life. One small shift in how you speak or listen. We always think we have more time. But maybe it’s time we started acting like we don’t because everything we’re hoping will change…depends on what we choose to do today.
